Cold forming rolls are the core tooling of profile cold roll forming machines, which directly determine the surface quality, dimensional accuracy of finished profiles and overall production efficiency. During continuous rolling production, metal chips, residual cooling liquid, oil stains and surface oxide layers will continuously adhere to roll surfaces. Without standardized daily cleaning and maintenance, rolls will suffer from surface scratches, wear aggravation, rust and profile sticking defects, greatly shortening their service life. This article introduces standardized daily cleaning and maintenance procedures for cold forming rolls for reference.

1. Pre-production Inspection & Preliminary Cleaning

Before starting daily production, cut off power and conduct visual inspection first. Operators need to remove floating metal scraps and accumulated dust on roll grooves and surfaces with soft bristle brushes or industrial vacuum cleaners. Hard scrapers are forbidden to avoid scratching the high-precision roll working surface.

Meanwhile, check roll surface conditions carefully: confirm no corrosion, indentation, crack or abnormal groove wear; inspect the alignment of upper and lower rolls to prevent eccentric friction during operation. Check the lubrication status of roll bearings and transmission shafts, and replenish dedicated lubricating grease in time if oil shortage occurs.

2. In-operation Real-time Cleaning & Lubrication

Keep circulating cooling and lubricating liquid running normally during formal rolling. The cooling liquid can reduce rolling friction and take away hot metal debris timely, avoiding thermal fatigue and surface gluing of rolls caused by continuous high friction heat.

Clean the roll gap regularly during production shutdown intervals. Remove stubborn oil sludge and bonded metal particles attached to forming grooves with lint-free soft cloth matched with professional cleaning agent. Keep the roll groove smooth all the time, which can prevent profile surface burrs and roll local wear.

3. Post-production Overall Cleaning & Anti-rust Treatment

After finishing daily production, perform thorough overall cleaning after rolls cool down completely. Firstly, clean all residual cooling liquid and dirt inside roll grooves and both sides of rolls. Secondly, wipe roll surfaces dry completely to eliminate residual moisture, as humid environment is the main cause of roll surface rust.

For conventional daily shutdown, apply a thin layer of anti-rust oil evenly on roll working surfaces. For weekend shutdown or long-term production halt, enhance anti-rust coating and wrap rolls with waterproof dustproof film for isolation protection.

4. Regular Calibration & Auxiliary Maintenance

Besides daily cleaning, make regular position calibration for cold forming rolls every week. Deviated roll installation will cause unilateral friction and accelerated groove wear. In addition, replace contaminated cooling liquid regularly and clean the liquid filter, to avoid circulating hard impurities scratching roll surfaces repeatedly.

5. Forbidden Operations to Protect Rolls

  • Do not use hard metal tools to polish roll grooves forcibly;

  • Do not run the machine without materials for a long time, which will increase idle wear;

  • Do not process unqualified raw steel plates with burrs and hard impurities directly.

Conclusion

Scientific daily cleaning and maintenance can effectively reduce surface wear, rust and thermal damage of cold forming rolls. Standardized pre-check, in-process lubrication, post-shutdown anti-rust care and regular calibration can extend roll service life by more than 30%, stabilize profile forming accuracy, and reduce frequent tooling replacement costs for cold forming production lines.
